What you need to know about firmware attacks
A security researcher's recent proof of a BIOS firmware attack has many readers concerned about the future of firmware attacks. Here's the reality.
First of all, I'm assuming you know what firmware is: software written to a rewriteable chip, such as the BIOS chip, a hard drive controller chip, and so on. Almost every electronic device today has a rewritable firmware chip.

Bitton boss: Pressure is on Mangotsfield
FA CUP PREVIEWS
Bitton boss John Lester insists his Toolstation League underdogs will have nothing to lose when they take on Southern League Mangotsfield in today's FA Cup preliminary round derby clash at Cossham Street.
In buoyant mood after brushing aside Bristol Manor Farm in the last round, Bitton's players sense an opportunity to pull off a giant-killing act.
Lester said: "All the pressure will be on Mangotsfield. They play in a higher league and their supporters and directors will be expecting them to win.
"My chairman is happy because we have already banked some money from the cup and my players can just enjoy the game and see what happens.
"This is a derby match and my players will definitely be up for it."
Although Bitton will be without Mitch Tippins, Matt Knapman and Keiron Williams, they will be motivated by the prospect of a showdown with Chippenham in the first qualifying round.
Mangotsfield boss Richard Thompson, meanwhile, has revealed that a potential FA Cup run has not been factored into the club's budget – because his record as a manager in the competition is so bad.
"The FA Cup and the additional finance it can bring is always important to clubs at this level," said Thompson.
"It can give you an extra bit of added flexibility in terms of your playing budget, but we've not factored it in to ours because, basically, my record in the competition is abysmal."
Toolstation League First Division minnows Hengrove will relish being underdogs when they take on Premier League Buckland in Devon.
Manager Jamie Hillman said: "Everyone will expect Buckland to win and it is up to us to try to prove them wrong. In the end, the most important thing is for us to give a good account of ourselves."
A cheque worth £1,700 awaits the winners and Hillman added: "That is major money for a club like us."
Hallen, from the Toolstation League Premier Division, will be up against it when they travel to Southern League Division One South & West side Swindon Supermarine.
Cadbury Heath manager Andy Black must plot a way past Almondsbury UWE without three key first-team players in their all-Toolstation League tie.
Nick Dyer, Chris Ashley and Craig Parsons are all sidelined through injury, but Danny Hallett may return to the squad.

IRISNotes 2 looks to undercut Livescribe, digitizes your scribbles for $99
IRIS is trying to make a big name for itself in the OCR world. But, top notch software alone isn't going to put its name on the tips of consumers tongues. For that they're gonna need something sexier, more... tangible. With its portable scanner line already on shelves the company is pushing out an update to its digital pen series IRISNotes. The IRISNotes Express 2 and Executive 2 are very similar to the intriguing Livescribe that, while compelling, never seemed to fly off the shelves. IRISNotes ditches the special paper required by its more popular competitor, and instead uses a small receiver that clips to the top of a standard sheet to record your scrawl in digitized form. IRIS hasn't specified how much storage is on board, only saying that it can save 100 pages worth of notes before you'll need to download its contents to a PC. The $99 Express undercuts Livescribe's cheapest offering by $20, but it's worth noting that it doesn't have support for voice notes or a stable of applications that tie into its ecosystem. The Executive model retails for $149 and sports a more elegant finish, befitting its name. It also comes with a 30-pin adapter that lets you dump your missives directly to an iDevice. Both are available now, and you'll find complete PR after the break.

Intellectual Ventures launches Kymeta spinoff, promises slim satellite broadband hotspots
Intellectual Ventures is best known for its tendency to sue everyone, but it's going some distance to mend that bruised image through a newly spun out company, Kymeta. The startup hopes to improve the quality of satellite broadband through mTenna-branded, Ka-band hotspots made from metamaterials -- substances that can boost and manipulate a satellite signal while occupying virtually no space, leading to self-pointing transceivers that are just a fraction of the size of what we use today. That still amounts to equipment the size of a laptop running at a peak 5Mbps, although it's small enough that Kymeta sees hotspots reaching individual customers who want access from a boat, a car or the field. We'd just advise against tossing out the MiFi too quickly. Kymeta doesn't expect the hotspot to be ready before late 2014 at the earliest, and that leaves many questions about how much of a hit we'll take to the pocketbook.
